Choosing the right marquee size for a function or event can be a difficult task for most people unless they have already hired a marquee in their past. The following are a few important tips to guide you on the right choice for your event.

How much space do I need to hire a marquee?

When deciding on the right size for the marquee structure, the first consideration is what space is available for the marquee itself. Free standing marquees can be put up very close to existing structures. No additional space is required for anchoring. However, when hiring a peg and pole marquee additional anchoring space is required.

To determine the marquee size for a cocktail or standing event, it is commonly recommended throughout the event industry to allow one square meter per guest. Hence, for a 100 guest cocktail event suitable marquee size is a 10m x 10m marquee or a 9m x 12m marquee. Sitting down events require more space, generally to allow for the extra chairs and tables hire. 10m x 15m marquee hire would be the right marquee size for a function with approximately 100 guests (which is approximately half the size of a tennis court).

Other factors to determine the size of the marquee, is what is what else is required for the event. Are you hiring a stage for a band or a speaker, a dance floor? Is space required for the caterer’s?  And if so, will this be within the marquee, or a separately attached marquee?  Do you require a cake table, bar area, or separate tables for the food service? Also the shape of the tables and the table layout influences the marquee size. Hiring 10 standard size banquet round tables (6’ in diameter, seating up to 10 people) will require more space then having 2 rows of 5 rectangular trestle tables (8’trestle table, seating up to 8 people).
